  • Characteristics: Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an annual or biennial herb. If it is a biennial, it bursts forth in the spring with a bunch of prickly leaves with prominent white veins. In late June, purplish-red inflorescences appear on stems about 1 m long. At the end of summer, the flowers develop into fruits, which are then harvested. Milk thistle has beneficial effects on the liver.

Milk thistle oil is a pure, natural product, without admixtures of other types of oils, with a light yellowish, clear color. It is cold-pressed, so it is not deprived of natural nutrients or flavor and odor substances. It has a characteristic, delicate oil scent.

At temperatures around the freezing point and lower, milk thistle oil can become cloudy. However, this is not a problem, at a higher ambient temperature, the haze will dissolve again. Although the oil is food grade, it is not handled under food grade conditions. Therefore, we recommend giving it only to animals. It is a unique source of unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (so-called omega acids).

The positive and healing effects of milk thistle oil are due to the substances it contains: Carotenoids, tocopherols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, Vitamin F and a smaller proportion of a complex of substances called Silymarin - the higher content of which is in the skins of the seeds.

Silymarin is a collective name for several substances, where silibinin is the most represented, followed by silicristine, silydianin and inosilibinin. These substances have a number of very beneficial effects. However, its main importance lies in supporting the proper functioning of the liver. It helps to improve the metabolism of the liver cell, stabilizes its cell membranes, supports the regeneration of liver tissue and is an important antioxidant (removes dangerous substances = free radicals). Its significant application includes the treatment of the consequences of poisoning with hepatotoxic poisons (hepatotoxic = that which is toxic, poisonous to the liver).

Positive effects of milk thistle oil:

  1. detoxification of the organism
  2. preventive protection of the liver against obesity and harmful metabolites
  3. reduces the slightly negative effect of drugs burdening the liver - antibiotics, etc.
  4. has an anti-inflammatory effect
  5. prevention at high load
  6. an important source of fatty acids

Use: Milk thistle oil can also be a flavoring additive to dry feed, which additionally enriches it with a significant amount of unsaturated fatty acids and energy.

  • Dosage: For dogs, as a precaution, a full tablespoon / 10 kg of weight, per individual feeding dose - mix into the feed. For large dogs, 5-7% of the feed volume (50-70 ml/kg feed). Can be served all year round. Exceeding the daily dose once is not a health risk for the animal.
  • Storage and consumption: Milk thistle oil is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation - direct sunlight, and long-term (months) to higher temperatures (over approx. 24 °C). Therefore, store it in dark bottles or in the dark, ideally up to 15 °C, or max. at room temperature. However, it does not mind short-term heating, e.g. during transport by car in the summer, and if it freezes and precipitates - let it warm up at room temperature, it will be clear again.

Stored in optimal conditions, consume within 10 months. To preserve the maximum nutritional value, preferably within 6 months.
